Hexagram 16: Enthusiasm (豫)

Hexagram 16, Yu (豫), places Thunder above Earth — the image of stored energy finally releasing into movement. In the I Ching, this hexagram describes the conditions for genuine collective enthusiasm: not manufactured excitement, but the natural release of energy that has been properly prepared and timed. The classical Judgment reads: "mobilize energy through rhythm, morale, and preparation."

The hexagram is notable for its emphasis on music and ritual as practical tools. The I Ching commentary describes how ancient kings used music to honor virtue and offer it to the ancestors — not as decoration, but as a technology for aligning people's emotions and creating shared readiness for action. Enthusiasm, in this sense, is something that can be deliberately cultivated.

The image says: "Thunder emerges from earth; movement follows stored readiness." The practical lesson is about sequencing: enthusiasm that is not grounded in real preparation exhausts itself quickly. The thunder in this hexagram has been building underground — the release is powerful because the preparation was real.

In organizational terms, this hexagram describes the difference between a launch that lands and one that fizzles. The conditions for genuine enthusiasm — clear purpose, shared rhythm, visible leadership, and a sense that the moment is right — must be built before the release, not improvised during it.

In career or leadership contexts, Hexagram 16 often appears when someone needs to rally a team, launch a campaign, or create momentum around a new direction. The hexagram supports the move but asks whether the conditions for genuine buy-in have been established. People commit to movements they feel, not just movements they are told about.
